Elephants Making First Love in Berlin Zoo

Knowledge: Elephants are generally capable of breeding year-round, but some seasonalization is emerging in regions with more pronounced seasons. The rutting phase of cows is one of the longest among mammals, lasting between 13 and 18 weeks. It is divided into a luteal phase lasting between 6 and 12 weeks and a follicular phase lasting 4 to 6 weeks.

There is a short, non-luteal phase between the two sections, during which there is a double increase in the production of luteinizing hormones. Only the second production spurt ultimately leads to ovulation after a period of 12 to 24 hours. It is not clear what the purpose of the first hormone surge is.

It may be part of the elephants' reproductive strategy, allowing cows to attract the attention of mating bulls early on. Another explanation would be that the body is physically preparing for impending fertilization. Because of this long cycle, cows are typically only receptive three to four times a year.

In the majority of cases, a fertilized egg is formed, the follicle has a diameter of 21 mm, which is relatively small for animals of this size. The status of the sexual cycle is communicated via low-frequency sounds and chemical signals such as pheromones in the urine. Both communication methods can be used over long distances.
